Sheila Esposito, 50, of Wilmington, Mass., will be staying at Motel Caswell for a week, photographed at the motel in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, USA, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011. Esposito says she has known the motel since she was a child, and has been living at the motel periodically over the past few years, always in room 231 at the end of the motel's second building. She's staying at the motel with her dog Alex. She says the motel is a place to stay "just for the time being." She's an LNA (licensed nurse assistant) and is looking for work in the field. On this day, she was offered 3 jobs, though none in healthcare. With her husband, she bought a house about 10 years ago, but lost it 5 years ago. To move into an apartment in the area, she estimates that she'd need about six thousand dollars to cover first and last month's rent, security deposit, and a pet deposit. Paying $800/month, Esposito says, "How can you beat that? You could go down the road and pay $200 a night and they wouldn't let the dog in." ..The motel is owned by Russell Caswell. Caswell's father built the motel in the 1950s. Now, conservative activitists are trying to use federal asset-forfeiture laws to seize the motel, saying that the motel is used by drug dealers to conduct business. The legal challenge intends to show evidence tying the property to crimes in order to seize the motel.....CREDIT: M. Scott Brauer for the Wall Street Journal.slug: FORFEIT
